Why Buy Organic?
What is “Organic”?
Food items and cotton clothing often sport the term “organic”. It means that no pesticides, chemicals or other unnatural treatments have been used in its production.
What are pesticides used for?
Pesticides are used to keep pests from damaging crops and, to ensure they reach our table without growing mouldy too soon, they may be sprayed with a fungicide. The pros and cons of pesticides and other chemicals used in agriculture vary from chemical to food type.
Why should I be concerned?
The concern is that pesticides are intentionally designed to destroy life forms and exposure to them has a destructive impact on health as well as our environment. Farm workers especially, can be exposed to dangerouly high levels when applying these products to crops.
How does this affect me?
The food we eat, cotton clothing and our personal care products may contain unnatural chemical products or residues that cause allergic reactions. Research has also linked exposure to pesticides residues in food and clothing to increasing health problems, from skin allergies like eczema to cancers. The unborn foetus, babies and young children are particularly vulnerable.
What can I do?
- Buy organic products whenever you can. Find a local Veg Box scheme
- Most importantly, don't panic! It's easy to get overwhelmed, and wonder what to do next. Be encouraged that every little step to make changes, however big or small, counts.
